Textiles

I've worked in a design and construction capacity, mostly prototyping. My experience spans a variety of projects, from fabric robotics and orthotics to cycling textiles to large show kites to toys.

Inflatable Robotics

Using heavy duty coated fabrics and polyurethane bladders, we prototyped robots made of nothing but fabric and air. All fabric construction was done on the sewing machine and bladder construction with a heat sealer. The sewn geometries that enabled actuation were entirely novel, picky, and complex.

These robots ranged from stand-alone arms and hands for joint testing to full bodied humanoid robots. We worked with Darpa, Arpa-E and Nasa.

We also made an inflatable car…

Inflatable Orthotics:

Using the same technology as the robots and similar materials, we prototyped fabric, air-actuated assistive orthotic devices. The intent in both projects was to create light-weight, human-safe, and affordable products.

Kites:

We designed and constructed large show kites, including a 50m x 40m world flag, the world's largest kite at the time.

Crafts:

I design and make a variety of felt animals and mobiles for my daughter.
